A Bronx Tale

In the movie, A Bronx Tale, the social construction of the Italian neightborhood where "C" lives is extremely noticeable. They have unwritten rules such as everyone is "family" who is Italian and that if you are Italian then you go after Italian girls and no other, especially African Americans. They have a certain level of respect for one another, and above all they have respect for Sonny; or more like respect out of fear of him. Everyone acts different when he is around because thats how it was in that neighborhood. If Sonny asked you to do something, you did it, and disobeying him could have serious consequences. These rules and ways of behavior came about first off from being a tight-knit Italian community. You protected your nationality and you didn't let anyone take that away from you. They also came about from not wanting to mingle with other nationalities out of fear. Then the reason why everyone acted even more differently around Sonny was out of respect and fear resulting from actions staken by him and words spoken by him and other people around him.

  1. Good summary of the movie so far. In the movie, the Italians are definitely all about protecting each other, and only involved with other Italians. If they interacted with anybody else, they would probably get looked down upon by a lot of people. Sonny is practically the leader of the community too. The rest of the movie should be good!

  2. I wasn't at school today so I gave me a good idea of what the movie was about. I like how this movie really shows you the different "groups" in this neighborhood and how they are all interconnected. Everything we do connects and affects those around us.

  3. This movie is amazing! And your summary is awesome, what I really like about this movie is the whole dynamic of the neighborhood, I think the perfect representation was the Hell's Angles bar fight scene, after Sonny and his men had had their way and let the bikers out into the street, the rest of the people in the neighborhood followed suit and started beating up the bikers too. It shows how tight knit this community really is and that sonny is boss, I like the dynamic!

  4. It's interesting to see how the macro sociology comes into play in this movie--that even though only a handful of people are involved with Sonny's Italian gang, they all have a strong sense of loyalty to each other and stand together to face outside threats, such as the hell's angels biker crew.

  5. I think that while watching this movie and seeing that the Italians only hang out with the Italians is very interesting. They don't "mingle" or go near anyone else who is a different race. Like you said, they go for Italian girls and thats it.

  6. I definitly agree with your post. Your surroundings shape you as a person. When you're surrounded with bad people, you make bad decisions (viceversa). I also think the whole race thing plays a huge role in this movie too. And it's terrible to think at one point that, that's how people acted towards eachother.
